A Legacy of Service

Commissioners Jolene and Kenneth G. Hodder retire after 37 years of service.

2017: The Hodder family has a rich legacy within The Salvation Army, spanning multiple generations. Ken is a sixth-generation Salvationist, and Jolene is a fifth-generation Salvationist. Their daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren are continuing this tradition of service in their local corps.

California, 1988: Before their commissioning as Messengers of Joy in 1988, Commissioners Kenneth G. and Jolene Hodder had successful careers in the corporate world. Ken graduated from Harvard College and Harvard Law School, practicing corporate and real estate law in Los Angeles. Jolene graduated from California State University in Los Angeles with a degree in Family Studies and Consumer Science, as well as a certificate in fashion merchandising. She worked as a divisional manager for a large retail corporation. They left it all when they felt God’s call to serve.

Isembe, Kenya, 2015: In their almost 37 years as active officers, the Hodders served in corps appointments, at the School for Officers Training in both the USA Western and USA Southern Territories, and in divisional leadership roles.  Their leadership extended internationally as they served in the Kenya Territory, the Kenya East Territory, at International Headquarters, and in the Kenya West Territory. They are concluding their ministry as national leaders for The Salvation Army in the United States.

Turkana, Kenya, 2013: Commissioner Jolene has dedicated herself to leading women to Christ and empowering them to reach their full potential in Him. In 2021, her ministry efforts were honored with congressional recognition. In 2023, she addressed a She Leads America/UK gathering at Windsor Castle, where she focused on the plight of marginalized women worldwide.

Louisiana, 2021: Commissioners Hodder have been deeply involved in disaster response and relief efforts throughout their officership. During their tenure, they have overseen responses to hurricanes, wildfires, and floods. They also played a significant role in The Salvation Army’s efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic.

With Johnny Carson, 1984: Commissioners Hodder have worked with many influential supporters of The Salvation Army, including The Dallas Cowboys, Walmart, Dolly Parton, Carlos and Alexa PenaVega, and Erin and Ben Napier.

Sri Lanka, 2022: Having served as missionaries for eight years, the Hodders have demonstrated an ongoing passion for the overseas work of The Salvation Army.

United Kingdom, 2023: Commissioner Kenneth Hodder served as President of the 2023 High Council, was nominated for General at three High Councils, and was selected by NonProfit Times in 2023 as one of the nation’s Top 50 non-profit leaders.

National Advisory Board: As national leaders, the Hodders have emphasized the value of the National Advisory Board and poured themselves into pastoral ministry to board members. The visit of the NAB to Capitol Hill in (January) 2024 was a highlight of their leadership.

Capitol Hill: As National Leaders, Commissioners Hodder have made it a priority to engage with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle. They have regularly visited hundreds of offices, offering encouragement and prayers to members of both the Senate and House of Representatives. Along with visiting and praying with many Senators and Representatives, the Hodders presented awards to notable members of Congress, such as Senators Dianne Feinstein and Chuck Grassley.

Washington, D.C.: The Hodders are set to retire on March 1st and will be relocating to Suwanee, GA, to be near their family. They are looking forward to becoming part of the Gwinnett County Corps.
